As far as i know, android 4+ is the best os for using these kind of programs, android 5+ introduced some sort of protection of data. My experience come from MSA, where you were able to change all the data client-side on android 4.4 but on android 5+ you can't find those values anymore.

I don't know GG very well, but on cheat engine you can "save" different values of different type of values, and maybe is what you need to change a 2 star unit to a 40+10 5 star units. Maybe there's a binary/byte/string type of value that have to be edited at the same time of the usual dword type of value. (Sorry for the bad explaination)

i don't think so, you can clearly hear windows noises, that mean he might be using cheat engine on emulated device

What values did you search, in order to modify the rank ? 'cause when i try to do it my rank gets canceled by the original one after a while, even after a restart
